Let’s be real. Between early morning meetings, school drop-offs, dinner duty, and never-ending to-do lists, life can feel like a full-contact sport. But here’s the truth: in the chaos, your routine matters more than ever. And not just because it keeps your goals on track, but because you matter.
I always tell my clients motivation is a unicorn. It’s magical, but it’s not real—at least not every day. What is real, though? Structure. Systems. A mindset that says, “I get to do this,” even when life pulls you in every direction.
You don’t need more motivation. You need a plan that works for your real life—and a reminder that even in the madness, you’ve still got this.
Here’s how to build consistency, even when life isn’t cooperating.
1 Set Yourself Up the Night Before
Mornings can be absolutely unpredictable, especially with kids—someone’s always missing a shoe or needs a form signed last-minute. That’s why your nighttime routine is everything. Lay out your gym clothes, pack lunches and snacks, fill up your water bottle, and map out the next day’s priorities the night before. Even five minutes of planning can save you 30 the next day.
2 Make Your Workout Non-Negotiable
Your workout is not a “maybe.” It’s a meeting with yourself. Schedule it into your calendar like a business call, and protect that time. There’s no right or wrong time to train; it’s about what fits your schedule best. For moms with packed evenings or chaotic mornings, lunch hour workouts or quick sessions during naptime can be game-changers.
3 Use Your Surroundings to Your Advantage
Waiting at your kid’s soccer practice? That’s a window! Walk to perimeter of the field. Bring resistance bands or do a bodyweight circuit on the sidelines. It’s not about finding the perfect conditions; it’s about creating momentum with what you’ve got.
4 Create a No-Excuses Environment
Make it easy to win. Set up a dedicated space in your home for quick workouts. Keep a few go-to meals prepped or stored in the freezer so dinner doesn’t derail your routine. Remove friction wherever you can. The less you have to think, the more likely you are to follow through.
5 Reconnect With Your “Why”
When things get hectic (and they will!), ask yourself, “Why did I start this journey?” Whether it’s to feel stronger, lead your kids by example, or finally make yourself a priority, hold that vision. Keep a photo, mantra, or reminder where you can see it daily. Your “why” is your anchor.
Busy is a given. But consistency? That’s a choice. You make it the night before, in your calendar, and every time you choose progress over perfection. It takes practice, but remember that the more you put it into practice, the easier it will become. You’ve got this!
