Are you ready to compete?

Last year, I wrote the article “So You Want to Compete?” for this very column and held a free “ask me anything” Zoom call. Both sparked a wave of messages from women. Since then, I’ve worked with many of them, helping to chart their path and taking stock of the questions that arose over the course of the year.

Unfortunately, no one posts about the doubts, the confusion, the moments when you ask yourself, “Am I actually ready for this?” So, let’s go there—the real questions that competitors don’t always feel comfortable asking, so you can get on the fast track to success!

Q:

How do I know if I’m ready to compete?

A: The truth? Most unseasoned athletes don’t know! Sometimes the only way to find out is to compete. After all, as they say, experience is the best teacher.

You can also ask a qualified coach, judge, or promoter for honest feedback before committing. They can assess your physique, presentation, and timeline objectively. But your friends, family, or gym buddy? They’re not how you should gauge your readiness. Competing is the test that reveals where you stand and what you still need to build.

Q:

Is it normal to love the process but not the pressure?

A: Absolutely. In this world, the stage is only one part of the experience—it’s not the entire reason to do it. The process of preparing for competition builds discipline, awareness, and confidence that carry into every area of life. You can love the structure and transformation, even if you don’t crave the spotlight. Being a competitor isn’t about the applause—
it’s about the evolution.

Q:

What kind of help do I actually need?

A: During the live call I held last year, many women had already started their competition journey—they were training, meal prepping, even practicing their poses. But most needed help putting it all together.

Understanding the difference between a physique coach, a posing coach, and a competition prep coach can be a game changer. Each plays a different role, and when you know who does what, you can build a team that supports, not overwhelms you.

Q:

How much does competing really cost?

A: It adds up faster than most expect! Registration fees, travel, tanning, hair and makeup, suit, shoes, jewelry, posing sessions, coaching, recovery, and food prep—it’s all part of the investment.

Budget for your goals as seriously as you train for them. Ask questions early: what’s included, what’s extra, and where can you repurpose what you already own? Sometimes the smartest investment isn’t cutting corners—it’s knowing where spending now saves stress later. Focus on the foundation: the experience, the presentation, and the lessons that will carry you forward.

Q:

Do I really need a posing coach?
A: If you already knew how to move and place your physique to perfection, you wouldn’t need one—but most don’t. Posing can separate a finalist from forgettable.

It’s not a formality; it’s your translator. It’s how the judges see your hard work. You could have the best physique in the lineup, but if you don’t know how to display it, you’ll never get full credit.

Don’t skip your posing. And don’t rush it! Prioritize it like it’s part of your training—because it is.

Q:

What happens after the show?
A: Post-show blues hit hard—and usually because people stop everything. If nothing else, remember this: you’ve built a finely tuned machine with no off switch. You still have work to do.

Reverse-diet properly. And make sure you take time to celebrate! Get your show photos and videos, host a watch party with friends, and collect feedback from judges. After that, set new goals and start mapping the next chapter. The show isn’t the finish line—it’s just a checkpoint in your evolution.
