Tamara Vahn shares the best ways to budget for your fitness competition.

Whether you’ve already stepped on stage or you’re still in the “maybe I’ll compete” phase, there’s a moment when you run the numbers on this sport and think, “Wait—how did this get so expensive?”

For some women, that realization hits after their first show, while scrolling through their banking app. For others, it hits earlier—pricing out coaching, a suit, tan, and travel, and suddenly wondering if this dream is only for people with endless disposable income.

The good news is you can love this sport and protect your bank account. The key is seeing the real costs early and building a budget with the same intention you bring to your training plan.

What You’re Actually Paying For

Instead of asking, “How much does it cost to compete?” a better question is, “What am I paying for when I decide to compete?”

Most expenses fall into a few core categories:

Federation and show fees

Coaching, posing, and feedback

Nutrition and bodycare

Suit or costume, shoes, and accessories

Tan, hair, and makeup

Travel and accommodation

Photos, video, and keepsakes

Once you see the full landscape, the next step isn’t panic—it’s prioritizing.

You can love this sport and protect your bank account.

This Isn’t Selfish or “Just Vanity”

It’s easy to talk yourself out of planning—especially financial planning—because voices around you (or in you) whisper, “Why should I spend this on myself? Isn’t this selfish? Isn’t bodybuilding just vanity?”

The truth is:

Competing can be one of the most structured, disciplined, and growth-filled projects you take on.

Learning to budget for it isn’t selfish—it’s responsible.

Being honest about what you can afford doesn’t make you less serious; it makes you
more sustainable.

Invest Like a Pro

If money is tight, instead of thinking, “Can I afford everything?” switch your thought process to “What will move the needle the most for me this year?”

Protect your non-negotiables: registration and entry fees, a suit that fits right, a well-executed tan, and some form of individualized feedback so you’re not guessing on your presentation, whether it’s through a coach, posing sessions, or at least a focused critique.

In my own coaching, I offer different posing and feedback options at different price points—including my virtual video critiques where athletes submit practice clips and receive targeted notes. This way, you can get “real eyes” on you, even when your budget is tighter.

After you have the basics down, look at the nice-to-haves: professional hair and makeup, luxury hotels and upgrades, multiple suits, elaborately themed costumes, and big photo packages. If you find you can fit these in later, that’s great!

Money Rules for Any Athlete

You wouldn’t jump from zero workouts to two-a-days and expect your body to thrive. Your finances need the same kind of structure. Think of the following as your five money rules—simple on paper, but powerful when you actually sit down and map them out.

1. Price the season, not just the show.

Decide your total first, including everything from the moment you commit to when you unpack after your last event.

2. Choose your shows with purpose.

Remember each one carries incidentals, beyond just another entry fee.

3. Don’t cut feedback to buy extras.

If you have to cut somewhere, cut the “extra sparkles” before you cut support that actually improves your physique and presentation.

4. Build a prep fund early and avoid debt.

Even setting aside a small weekly amount in the off-season adds up by show time.

5. If money stress is stealing your joy, change the plan.

Drop the shame: your value isn’t measured by your spend.

Put these all together, and you and your wallet will be ready to compete.
