They say that everything is bigger in Texas, and that applies to Austin’s own Karol Dugan, whose big personality is only surpassed by her bigger dreams. With more than a decade in the health and fitness industry, she’s now turning her focus to scaling her training business and imparting her personal approach to exercise on others—even though it may sound out of the ordinary to some.

“I’m changing the face of fitness by acknowledging something that most women already know but are rarely told is okay: motivation isn’t constant, and a healthy lifestyle doesn’t have to be strict all year long to be effective,” Karol stresses. Instead, her approach is built around balance and cycles, a sentiment that many women may find refreshing. “Most of the year, women should be able to live in a relaxed, sustainable way—what I call ‘squishy fit,’ a healthy, everyday body that supports mental well-being, hormones, and real life.” This phase prioritizes consistency, enjoyment, and self-trust rather than restriction or pressure.

But at certain points throughout the year, Karol recommends taking a new path, one that occurs naturally and is often linked to occasions or seasonal changes. Leading up to these milestones, such as a wedding, she embraces what she calls “event fitness.” As part of her training protocol, she offers programs and bootcamps that provide a framework in which her clients train intentionally, for shorter periods of time—without the burnout that sometimes comes with intense plans.

Motivation isn’t constant, and a healthy lifestyle doesn’t have to be strict all year long to be effective.

“These natural cycles between relaxed living and short periods of focus are not failures—they’re beneficial,” Karol explains. “They support women’s physical health, mental well-being, and long-term consistency. By normalizing flexibility instead of shame, I help women build healthier relationships with fitness, their bodies, and their lives.”

A major contributing factor to her belief in balance is her children, who she wants to grow up knowing that health can coexist with “joy, rest, celebration, and flexibility.” In fact, this approach was bred during one of the most challenging periods of Karol’s life: when she first welcomed her children into the world.

“During that time, movement gave me energy when I felt exhausted and structure when life felt unpredictable,” she says. “Even short walks or brief workouts helped me reset mentally and reconnect with my body.” Through gentle, consistent activity, she built resilience and self-compassion that helped her thrive during this emotionally difficult time.

And the effects were more than just physical, or even mental. “Because of this shift, fitness became less about results and more about showing up for myself, which ultimately made me a better, more grounded parent,” she says. And isn’t that what every mother wants for themselves, and their family?
