You know that hydration is key for serving the basic functions of the brain, circulatory system, and other vital organs. It’s important for keeping your joints lubricated for healthy, pain-free movement, and hydration impacts your metabolism, including keeping your body at a normal, healthy temperature. It’s essential we consume the water we need to function optimally—especially while we’re training hard or when we’re preparing to train hard. And we know you train hard.

Your Water RX

The standard suggestion for your water intake is, on average, about three liters on a rest day. For the hard-training woman like yourself on a training day, it’s more like a range of three-and-a-half to four liters of water. But of course, specific water intake needs vary greatly and depend on your metabolism and your training environment.

The Electrolyte Equation

In addition to prioritizing water, we also need to ensure that electrolytes are being delivered and balanced. As the name suggests, electrolytes are chemicals that conduct electricity when dissolved in water. They help to regulate nerve and muscle function, maintain fluid balance inside and outside of cells, balance pH levels (acidity and alkalinity) and blood pressure, and help rebuild damaged tissue. We get electrolytes from food and drink, and we lose them through bodily secretions (e.g., sweat) and excretions (e.g., urine, diarrhea, and vomit).

Electrolytes include sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, phosphate, bicarbonate, and magnesium. The most identifiable sources of electrolytes are sports drinks, but quite often the lower quality sports drink brands contain as much, if not more, sugar than they do actual electrolytes that can be used by the body.
