The allure of quick fixes in health and wellness is more enticing than ever in today’s fast-paced world. With a plethora of diets, biohacking, and supplements flooding our screens, it’s easy to get swept away in the latest fads. However, before jumping down the rabbit hole of shortcuts, it’s crucial to master the fundamentals of health and wellness first. Without a solid foundation with which to approach your nutrition, training, and longevity practices, trendy methods may lead to disappointment, confusion, or even harm. Once fundamental habits are met with consistency, then finding new methods to up-level your health are great additions to your routine.

Before considering “fancy fluff” make sure you’ve got these bases covered with your program/lifestyle:

Resistance Training

This can include free weights, machines, bodyweight, bands, kettlebells, etc. Aim for 3-5 days per week (5 for body transformations, 3 for maintenance) hitting all muscle groups, and including progressive overload (change in weight load, timing, super-setting, etc).

Balanced Nutrition

Proper nutrition is at the heart of wellness. This looks different for everyone—nutrition should be tailored to your specific goals, current lifestyle, output, etc. From prioritizing protein to utilizing carbohydrates for energy/recovery and fats for cognitive function, your nutritional habits should not feel restrictive, or unmanageable for the long haul. If wanting to experiment with techniques such as intermittent fasting, carb cycling, or macro-counting, ensure the fundamental basics are met first.

"Mastering the basics is crucial for sustainable wellness."

Hydration

Water is vital for nearly every bodily function. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, headaches, and reduced cognitive function. Aim to drink at least 2 litres of water daily, adjusting for physical activity and climate. Adding 1/4 teaspoon of Celtic Sea Salt to your morning glass of water can top up your electrolyte levels.

Regular Sleep Patterns/Rest

Sleep is often underestimated but is a critical component of health. Adults should aim for 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep per night. Establish a consistent sleep schedule and create a relaxing bedtime routine to improve sleep quality. Don’t forget to take rest days while resistance training. These days can include mobility work, stretching, walking, and other“light” forms of movement.

Stress Management

Chronic stress can negatively impact your health, leading to various conditions like anxiety and heart disease. Incorporate stress management techniques into your routine. Try things such as mindfulness, meditation, yoga, or simply taking time for hobbies you love.

While chasing the latest health trends may be tempting they also focus on temporary change in lieu of achieving genuine healthy habits and making comprehensive lifestyle changes. Mastering the basics is crucial for sustainable wellness. By focusing on foundational habits like resistance training, nutrition, hydration, sleep, and stress management, you set yourself up for success. Only then can you approach different avant-garde methods with knowledge and confidence, ensuring they enhance your health rather than hinder it. Prioritizing these essentials ensures your health journey will be far more rewarding.
