When delicious treats and tempting cocktails are plentiful, it’s easy to slip into a routine of much indulgence and little movement—driven by a mindset of “Starting back in January.” The key to enjoying this time of year without guilt and still living a fit lifestyle is striking balance between fun and fitness. Allowing for flexibility while staying mindful of your goals. Try these five tips to enjoy the holidays without having to start at square one in 2025.
1. Set Realistic Goals
Instead of aiming to lose weight during this time, focus on maintaining your current fitness level. This mindset alleviates the stress of strict dieting and reminds us that enjoying festive foods is okay.
2. Prioritize Activities That Bring Joy
Whether it’s a family walk after dinner or dancing to your favorite holiday tunes, do something that evokes joy, especially with the people you love! Don’t forget to include something a bit more structured, too, like an efficient Workout Circuit (see below), if training is truly your passion.
3. Pick Your Parties
Many of us are overwhelmed this season with parties for friends, family and work. Pick the parties where you are most comfortable with your closest people to relax and indulge, and rein in at the others, offering to drive (not drink) and bring a healthy option for the table. Eating a healthy meal or having a protein shake before heading out can also help with unnecessary temptation at those parties.

4. Set Up For Success
Sign up for a group fitness class, or arrange a hike/workout with friends the morning after a gathering. This will ensure you don’t head to bed too late, and perhaps curtail over-indulgence.
5. Set Parameters
Going into the season with no system is usually a recipe for failure. Set parameters that you can maintain that allow you to enjoy but also ensure you are not self-sabotaging. For example, drinking one glass of water in between each cocktail, or switching to non-alcoholic cider after two drinks. Maybe choose one savory and one sweet treat at the event and have a protein packed meal before or after.
Remember, the goal isn’t perfection but enjoyment—both in your workouts and everyday life, and holiday celebrations. By adopting a flexible attitude and finding moments to move, you can celebrate the season without sacrificing your health goals. Happy holidays!
